A young founder and the data of SUS

João Luís Freitas is 28 years old. He studied engineering at ITA, and now he studies medicine.

He founded a startup called Health Data Brasil. A startup is a new, small company.

The startup uses data from SUS, Brazil's public health system. It is more than 10 TB of data from 200 million patients, without their names. It does not need a supercomputer, a very big and powerful computer.

Hospitals use this technology in research about cancer. They study differences in diagnosis and treatment.

On October 20, 2026, João won the national prize of the Prêmio Na Prática. He said Brazil has gold and that people should not give up.

Engineer and medical student wins Prêmio Na Prática 2026 with SUS data startup

João Luís Freitas, a 28-year-old engineer and medical student, has been named the national winner of the Prêmio Na Prática: Protagonismo Universitário 2026. The winners were announced on October 20, 2026, at a ceremony in São Paulo. The award is organized by Na Prática, a nonprofit organization.

Freitas graduated in engineering from ITA and now studies medicine at USP. He founded Health Data Brasil, a startup that processes more than 10 TB of data from DataSUS, the database of Brazil's public health system, without needing a supercomputer. The data includes anonymized records of 200 million patients.

The technology supports cancer research in large Brazilian hospitals, looking at inequalities in diagnosis and treatment. According to Na Prática, it could also help shape public health policies.

More than 2,100 completed applications were analyzed, and 15 finalists reached the last stage. Freitas won the Southeast region and the national title. The prize includes mentoring and an educational immersion in China in early 2027. In his speech, he said Brazil has gold and that people should not give up.

Big data, no supercomputer: how João Luís Freitas won the Prêmio Na Prática

Brazil's public health system produces a vast amount of data, but making sense of it usually calls for serious computing power. João Luís Freitas found another way, and it earned him the national title at the Prêmio Na Prática: Protagonismo Universitário 2026, announced on October 20, 2026.

Freitas, 28, graduated in engineering from ITA, went on to a master's in data science and applied mathematics and is now studying medicine at USP. His startup, Health Data Brasil, has built an infrastructure that processes more than 10 TB of DataSUS data without needing a supercomputer, covering anonymized records of 200 million patients.

He started small, analyzing the public tables of DataSUS, then moved on to cross-referencing different databases and measuring the error involved. The method rebuilds each patient's anonymized path through specialized care, alongside socioeconomic indicators. That lets cancer research in large Brazilian hospitals zero in on inequalities in diagnosis and treatment. One project brings together 16 years of national data on Wilms tumor, a childhood kidney cancer.

The award, now in its second edition, is run by Na Prática, a nonprofit organization. More than 2,100 completed applications went through reasoning tests, regional panels and more than 500 interviews before 15 finalists faced an in-person final. Freitas took the Southeast before winning nationally; the prize includes an educational immersion in China in early 2027.

Accepting the award, he said Brazil has gold and urged people not to give up.

There is a lesson here for language learners: you do not need a perfect setup to start. Begin with what is in front of you, a short text or a simple conversation, and build from there.
