Four Brazilian students win medals in chemistry
Four Brazilian students won medals at the 30th Ibero-American Chemistry Olympiad. An olympiad is a big competition for students.
The olympiad took place in Fortaleza, in the state of Ceará, from October 13 to 19, 2026. Students from 15 countries took part.
Brazil won three silver medals and one bronze medal. Ruan, Breno and Marton won silver. Davi won bronze.
The four students are 18 years old. Breno studied for two years. Sometimes, he studied about ten hours a day!
Now the students have big plans. Marton wants to work with renewable energy. This is clean energy, like energy from the sun and the wind.

Students from the Fortaleza area win four medals at chemistry olympiad
Four high school students from the Fortaleza area have won three silver medals and one bronze medal for Brazil at the 30th Ibero-American Chemistry Olympiad. The competition was held in Fortaleza, Ceará, from October 13 to 19, 2026, and brought together students from 15 countries.
It was the first time the olympiad took place in Ceará. It was organized by the Brazilian Chemistry Association (ABQ), with support from the Brazilian Chemical Industry Association (Abiquim). Brazil is one of the founding countries and has taken part in every edition since 1995.
Ruan Cortês da Trindade, Breno Barros de Vasconcelos and Marton Sousa Soares won silver, and Davi Lisboa do Nascimento won bronze. All four are 18 years old. According to Abiquim, Breno prepared for two years, sometimes studying about ten hours a day, and said his biggest challenge was staying motivated.
The medalists are already thinking about the future. Marton hopes to enter ITA, an engineering school, and work with renewable energy. Davi plans to study engineering and work on fuels and electric batteries.

Three silvers and a bronze: what it takes to reach a chemistry podium
For the first time, the Ibero-American Chemistry Olympiad came to Ceará, and four Brazilian high school students made the most of it. At the 30th edition, held in Fortaleza from October 13 to 19, 2026, Ruan Cortês da Trindade, Breno Barros de Vasconcelos and Marton Sousa Soares won silver, while Davi Lisboa do Nascimento took bronze.
The competition, which started in Argentina in 1995, brought together students from 15 countries. It was organized by the Brazilian Chemistry Association (ABQ), with support from Abiquim, and Brazil, one of its founding countries, has never missed an edition.
Behind the medals are different paths. Ruan, 18, was born in Rio de Janeiro; his interest took off after his first experimental chemistry class, and a teacher who spotted his potential encouraged him to sign up for olympiads. Davi, also 18, comes from Palmas, in Tocantins, and has lived in Fortaleza for two years.
The common thread is persistence. Breno, 18, prepared for two years, at times putting in about ten hours a day, and described staying motivated as his greatest challenge. Davi, who competed in Moscow, said a conversation with a Chinese student there made him reflect on the dedication it takes to learn something in depth.
Their plans reach beyond the lab. Marton, who lives in Caucaia, hopes to get into ITA and work with renewable energy, while Davi wants to study engineering and work on fuels and electric batteries.
Davi's story holds a lesson for anyone learning a language: a short conversation with someone from another culture can show us how far we can still go.
