Still writing at 90: Adélia Prado's return to print pays off
Some writers fade from view as they grow older. Adélia Prado, at 90, has done the opposite: on 20 October 2026, the National Library Foundation (FBN) named her the winner of the poetry category of the 2026 Biblioteca Nacional Literary Prize.
The award, officially called the Alphonsus de Guimaraens Prize, went to O jardim das oliveiras, published by Editora Record. The collection marks the Minas Gerais poet's return to print after more than a decade without a new book, and it is also in the running for the Jabuti Prize.
Critics have taken notice. Writing for Estadão, the critic Mariana Ianelli described the book as gathering some of Prado's most beautiful and moving poems: high praise for an author whose list of honors already includes the Camões and Machado de Assis prizes.
The FBN prize spans 13 categories, and each first-place winner takes home R$30,000; second and third places are announced but carry no cash award. This year's list also features Paulliny Tort, who won the novel category with Os imortais, and the Indigenous leader Raoni Mẽtyktire, honored in the oral tradition category for Memórias do cacique.
Prado's win is a reminder that a long silence is not the same as having nothing left to say. Language learners can take heart from that: stepping away from a language for a while does not erase it, and coming back to it with more life behind you can give your words a depth they did not have before.
