Ruy Castro wins Book of the Year again

Ruy Castro is a Brazilian writer. On 27 October 2026, he won Book of the Year at the Jabuti Prize.

The Jabuti is a book prize in Brazil. Book of the Year is its main award. The winner gets R$70,000.

His book is called "Trincheira tropical". It is about Rio de Janeiro from 1935 to 1945, the years around the Second World War.

The book shows daily life in the city. There was rationing: people could buy only a little of some things. There were blackouts too, so the city was dark at night.

This is his second win in a row. In 2025, he won Book of the Year with a book about the musician Tom Jobim.

Ruy Castro takes the Jabuti's top award for the second year running

Brazilian writer Ruy Castro has won Book of the Year, the main award of the 68th Jabuti Prize, for the second year in a row. The winners were announced on the night of 27 October 2026 at Sala São Paulo, in central São Paulo.

He won with "Trincheira tropical: A Segunda Guerra Mundial no Rio", published by Companhia das Letras. The 448-page book had already won the Biography and Reportage category. As Book of the Year, it earns R$70,000, while winners in other categories receive R$5,000 and a statuette.

The book covers ten years in Rio de Janeiro, from 1935 to 1945, when the city was Brazil's capital. It describes rationing, blackouts and air-raid shelters, as well as spies, refugees and artists. According to the publisher, the war was already part of life in Brazil long before the country declared war on the Axis in 1942.

In 2025, Castro won Book of the Year with "O Ouvidor do Brasil: 99 vezes Tom Jobim", a book of texts about the musician, which had first won the Chronicle category.

Two in a row: how a city at war won Ruy Castro another Book of the Year

Winning a Jabuti Prize once is a career highlight; taking its top award two years running is something else entirely. On the night of 27 October 2026, at Sala São Paulo, Ruy Castro was named Book of the Year at the 68th edition of the prize, run by the Brazilian Book Chamber (CBL).

His winning title, "Trincheira tropical: A Segunda Guerra Mundial no Rio" (Companhia das Letras), had already taken the Biography and Reportage category before claiming the main prize, worth R$70,000. In 2025, Castro pulled off the same feat with "O Ouvidor do Brasil: 99 vezes Tom Jobim", which won the Chronicle category on its way to Book of the Year.

The 448-page book zooms in on a single decade, 1935 to 1945, when Rio de Janeiro was still the country's capital. Its publisher argues that the Second World War had reached Brazilians long before Brazil declared war on the Axis in 1942.

Castro reconstructs a city living with rationing, blackouts and compulsory air-raid shelters, crowded with spies, refugees, diplomats and artists. He also traces the clash between integralism, communism and democracy under Getúlio Vargas, and closes with Brazilian troops, the FEB, on the Italian front.

There is a lesson here for anyone learning a language. History rarely arrives as a single headline; it seeps into ordinary routines, from what people can buy to when the lights go out. Languages work the same way: you pick them up less from grand moments than from small, everyday details that you notice again and again.
