A science prize for packaging made from pineapple waste
Lucas Closs is a Brazilian student. He is 16 years old and goes to a school called IENH. He won a science prize of R$5,000.
He won it at Mostratec, a big science fair in Novo Hamburgo, in the south of Brazil. Young students showed 796 projects there.
Lucas's project uses pineapple waste. Waste is the part of the fruit that people throw away. He uses it to make packaging. Packaging is the material that protects products.
Lucas started his research when he was 12. He worked on it for about five years. He said the money will help him.
The winners got their prizes on October 30. Some prizes were scholarships for language courses.

Teen researcher wins R$5,000 at Mostratec for pineapple-waste packaging
Lucas Closs, a 16-year-old student at IENH, was one of the young researchers awarded at the 41st Mostratec, a science and technology fair organized by the Fundação Liberato in Novo Hamburgo, Rio Grande do Sul. He received R$5,000 for a project that turns pineapple waste into packaging.
The awards ceremony took place on October 30 at Teatro Feevale. Students from 21 Brazilian states, the Federal District and 13 other countries presented 796 projects. More than 30 organizations offered prizes, such as scholarships and project funding.
Lucas has been working on the idea since he was 12. According to the regional news site ABC+, he described the prize as the result of five years of work and said the money would help him develop the project.
Evaldo de Matos Vieira, 15, from Pedra Branca, Ceará, said taking part felt like representing his state. For José de Souza, executive director of Fundação Liberato, a country that wants to develop needs to understand the importance of science.

From fruit scraps to a science prize: the long road behind a teenager's packaging idea
Most of us throw away what is left of a pineapple without a second thought. Lucas Closs, a 16-year-old student at IENH, saw raw material instead. His pineapple-waste packaging earned him R$5,000 at the 41st Mostratec, one of Latin America's leading science fairs.
The awards ceremony was held on October 30 at Teatro Feevale, in Novo Hamburgo, Rio Grande do Sul. Organized by the Fundação Escola Técnica Liberato, the fair brought together 796 projects from 21 Brazilian states, the Federal District and 13 other countries, while more than 30 organizations stepped in with scholarships and project funding.
What makes Lucas's story stand out is the timeline. He kicked off the research at 12, and he told the regional news site ABC+ that the award was the payoff for five years of work and a sense of a job well done.
He was far from the only young researcher with a story to tell. Evaldo de Matos Vieira, 15, from Pedra Branca, Ceará, said being there felt indescribable because he carried his state with him. For José de Souza, the foundation's executive director, any country hoping to develop has to grasp the importance of science.
Fittingly, the prize list included full scholarships for language courses. Lucas did not reach a prize-winning idea in a single afternoon: he kept returning to the same question, year after year. Fluency grows the same way. Nobody masters a language in one intense week; small, steady steps, repeated over time, eventually become results others can see.
