A new AI helps doctors find a blocked artery

Doctors in São Paulo tested a new AI tool. It reads an ECG, a simple test of the heart.

It finds the most serious type of heart attack. In this type, an artery is blocked. An artery is a tube that carries blood. The tool shows which artery is blocked.

Scientists in Sweden and Brazil worked together. The AI learned from 540,372 ECGs from Sweden. Then the team at InCor, a heart hospital, tested it with 401 patients.

The AI was right in 96% of the clear cases and in 82% of the difficult cases.

The tool is still experimental. It needs approval from Anvisa, Brazil's health agency. It will not replace doctors.

AI tested at InCor spots the most serious heart attack and the blocked artery

Researchers at InCor, the Heart Institute of the University of São Paulo (USP), have tested an artificial intelligence tool that analyzes electrocardiograms (ECGs). It identifies the most serious type of heart attack, when a coronary artery is completely blocked, and indicates which artery is affected. The study, a collaboration with Uppsala University in Sweden, was published in Nature Communications.

The model was trained with 540,372 ECGs from Swedish emergency services, recorded between 2005 and 2016. It was then validated with 401 InCor patients, all confirmed by catheterization. It reached 96% accuracy in cases with the classic ECG pattern and 82% where that sign was not evident.

Co-author Marco Antonio Gutierrez, director of InCor's Informatics Service, said the main advance is in those less obvious cases. José Eduardo Krieger, director of InCor's Laboratory of Genetics and Molecular Cardiology, explained that decisions must be fast because every minute matters.

The tool is still experimental and needs approval from Anvisa, Brazil's health regulator. According to Krieger, it does not give the final diagnosis or replace a doctor's judgment.

Reading the subtle signs: InCor puts a heart attack AI to the test

When a coronary artery is completely blocked, the clock starts ticking. This is the most serious kind of heart attack, and spotting it on an electrocardiogram (ECG) is not always straightforward. A new AI model, put to the test at InCor, the Heart Institute of the University of São Paulo, aims to help doctors make the call and to point to the blocked artery.

The study, published in Nature Communications, is a collaboration with Uppsala University in Sweden. The model learned from 540,372 ECGs from Swedish emergency services; InCor then checked whether it held up elsewhere, validating it with 401 patients, all confirmed by catheterization.

The headline figure is 96% accuracy when the ECG shows the classic pattern. More telling is 82% in cases where that sign is not evident, which is where, according to co-author Marco Antonio Gutierrez, the main advance lies.

The stakes are high: doctors in ambulances must decide whether to give clot-dissolving drugs, which can save lives but can also trigger a hemorrhagic stroke. José Eduardo Krieger said every minute matters and described the AI as a high-precision classifier that gives doctors more confidence to act when the benefit outweighs the risk, not a replacement for clinical judgment.

Still experimental, the tool needs approval from Anvisa, and the team plans to test it at InCor in real-world conditions.

There is a lesson for language learners: real progress shows in the subtle cases. Anyone can follow a slow, carefully spoken sentence; fluency is tested when the signals are faint, like a quick reply or a strong accent. Practising with messy, real-world material, not just textbook examples, builds that kind of accuracy.
