A Brazilian vaccine against malaria
Malaria is a disease. People get it from a mosquito bite. There is no vaccine against one type, vivax malaria. A vaccine is a medicine that protects people.
Brazilian scientists created Vivaxin, a vaccine against vivax malaria. It comes from USP, UFMG and the company Cristália.
In October 2026, Anvisa, Brazil's health agency, said yes to the first tests in people.
The test will have 48 healthy volunteers, people who choose to help. They will get three doses, 28 days apart. Some get the vaccine. Others get a placebo, a product with no medicine.
In 2025, Brazil had 118,037 malaria cases. The country wants to stop the local spread of malaria by 2035.

Brazilian malaria vaccine gets approval for human trials
A vaccine against vivax malaria developed in Brazil has been approved for its first tests in humans. Anvisa, Brazil's health regulator, authorized the phase 1 trial in a resolution published on October 7, 2026. No vaccine for this type of malaria is available yet.
Vivaxin was developed at the University of São Paulo (USP) with CTVacinas, at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), and the pharmaceutical company Cristália. Irene Soares, from USP, and Ricardo Gazzinelli, director of CTVacinas, coordinate the project.
The trial will include 48 healthy volunteers aged 18 to 59 who have never had malaria. Selection begins in January 2027. Participants will receive three doses of vaccine or placebo, 28 days apart, and will be followed for one year. Soares said it took almost a year and a half to get the approval.
In 2025, Brazil recorded 118,037 malaria cases, 15% fewer than the year before. Gazzinelli said the vaccine could play an extremely important role in eliminating malaria from Brazil, which aims to end local transmission by 2035.

A first for vivax malaria: Vivaxin moves from the lab to human trials
No vaccine yet protects against vivax malaria, the form caused by the Plasmodium vivax parasite and spread by Anopheles mosquitoes. A Brazilian candidate, Vivaxin, may change that: Anvisa has cleared it for phase 1 trials in humans.
Irene Soares, of USP's School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, pointed out that it was conceived entirely in Brazil. She coordinates the work with Ricardo Gazzinelli, director of CTVacinas at UFMG, and the drugmaker Cristália, with funding from FAPESP, Finep and federal ministries.
Soares said it took almost a year and a half to secure Anvisa's go-ahead. In preclinical studies in mice and primates, the vaccine proved safe, highly immunogenic and capable of inducing 100% protection.
Phase 1 will enroll 48 healthy adults aged 18 to 59 with no history of malaria, with selection from January 2027. They will receive three doses of vaccine or placebo, 28 days apart, and be monitored for a year. If all goes well, phases 2 and 3 will involve around 300 people, mainly in the Amazon.
The stakes are high. Brazil recorded 118,037 locally acquired cases in 2025, 15% fewer than in 2024, over 95% of them in the Amazon. Gazzinelli argued the vaccine could play an extremely important role in eliminating malaria from the country, which has set a target of ending local transmission by 2035.
The lesson reaches beyond medicine: a vaccine prepares the body, in a safe setting, for a later threat. Language learning works the same way: the phrases you rehearse when nothing is at stake are the ones you can rely on in a real conversation.
