Three students against fake news

Alice Gomes, Beatriz Vasconcellos and Letícia de Oliveira are 14 years old. They are in the 9th grade at a school in Recife.

The three girls won HackaNAV 2026, a national competition for students. The teams created ideas against disinformation, or false information online.

Their tool is called Pense Bem. You write a post you want to share. The tool asks questions and shows the risk. Then it suggests changes.

The girls also created Fato ou Boato. You paste the link to a news story, and it checks if it is true.

Pense Bem is online, but the girls want to improve it. Their prize is a technology experience at NASA.

Recife students win HackaNAV 2026 with a tool against disinformation

Three 14-year-old students from Colégio e Curso Desafio, in Recife, have won HackaNAV 2026, a national innovation competition organized by Nave a Vela, from Arco Educação. This year, 8th and 9th graders at partner schools were challenged to create solutions against digital disinformation.

Alice Gomes, Beatriz Vasconcellos and Letícia de Oliveira developed Pense Bem. Users enter a post they plan to publish and answer questions, such as whether the real people in it gave consent. The tool then rates the risk and suggests changes.

The team also created Fato ou Boato, which checks a news story from its link. For their work, they interviewed teachers, students and experts. Letícia said disinformation had become a very serious problem. Alice said people often share information without checking whether it is true.

The final took place in São Paulo in October, with 10 finalist teams. The prize is a technology immersion at NASA. Pense Bem is already online, but the girls will improve it before the official launch.

Think before you post: three 14-year-olds take on disinformation

Checking whether a story is true is one way to take on disinformation. Asking whether your own post could mislead others is another. That second idea is behind Pense Bem, created by three 14-year-old students from Recife.

Alice Gomes, Beatriz Vasconcellos and Letícia de Oliveira, 9th graders at Colégio e Curso Desafio, won HackaNAV 2026 with it. The national innovation competition, run by Nave a Vela, from Arco Educação, asked 8th and 9th graders at partner schools to come up with solutions against digital disinformation. Ten finalist teams met in São Paulo in October.

Pense Bem works like a checklist for your conscience. Users enter a post they intend to publish and answer questions: Was it generated or edited by AI? Are real people recognizable? Did they consent? The platform then rates the risk and points out adjustments that could keep the post from spreading disinformation.

The trio also built Fato ou Boato, which assesses whether a news story is true from its link, and drew on interviews with teachers, students and experts. Beatriz warned that disinformation can harm democracy in election and non-election years alike.

The win caps a climb for the school, whose team finished third at the 2025 final. Pense Bem is already online, but it is due for improvements before its official launch. The prize is a technology immersion at NASA.

Alice said a good solution should help other people sharpen their critical thinking too. Before posting in a new language, that pause is twice as useful: check whether it is true, and whether it says what you mean.
