Five students, five medals

Five Brazilian students traveled to Hanoi, in Vietnam. They took part in the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics, or IOAA. It is a science competition for young people.

The competition ended on October 5, 2026. Brazil won one gold, one silver and three bronze medals. Every student on the team won a medal!

Eyke Cardoso de Souza Torres, from Ourilândia do Norte, in the state of Pará, won gold.

The other four students are 16 or 17 years old. They study in Fortaleza, in the state of Ceará.

Before the trip, the students took tests and trained in Brazil. Only five of the 45 students in training got a place on the IOAA team.

Brazil brings home five medals from the IOAA

Brazil won five medals at the 19th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics, known as the IOAA. The competition took place in Hanoi, Vietnam, from September 25 to October 5, 2026. Phenikaa University hosted the event.

The team won one gold, one silver and three bronze medals. All five students received a medal. Gold went to Eyke Cardoso de Souza Torres, from Ourilândia do Norte, Pará. The other team members, aged 16 and 17, study in Fortaleza.

To reach the international competition, the students first took part in the 2025 Brazilian Olympiad of Astronomy and Astronautics, or OBA. They then went through further tests and a national selection tournament. Of the 45 students chosen for training, five made the IOAA team.

Biatriz Soares Silva said that representing Brazil brought a lot of pressure. Isaac Victor de Araújo Santos described the selection process as uncertain but rewarding in the end. Their accounts show how demanding the journey to the competition was.

Five students, five medals: the preparation behind Brazil's IOAA success

Every member of Brazil's five-student delegation returned with a medal from the 19th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics. The result reflects success across the team: one gold, one silver and three bronze medals.

Hosted by Phenikaa University in Hanoi from September 25 to October 5, 2026, the competition brought together students from dozens of countries. Eyke Cardoso de Souza Torres, from Ourilândia do Norte in Pará, took gold. The other four Brazilian team members, aged 16 and 17, study in Fortaleza.

Behind the result was a demanding selection process. The students had participated in the 2025 Brazilian Olympiad of Astronomy and Astronautics before advancing through further exams and the national selection tournament, TSA². Forty-five students qualified for training, but only five made the final cut for the IOAA team.

The students were candid about the emotional demands of that journey. Biatriz Soares Silva acknowledged the pressure of representing Brazil. Isaac Victor de Araújo Santos recalled a process marked by uncertainty, although he ultimately found it rewarding.

Their accounts add a personal dimension to the medal count. The achievement belongs to students who had to navigate several stages of selection before competing abroad. It is also a reminder that talent can start anywhere, from a small city in Pará to schools in Ceará; what changes the story is the chance to show it.
