Alison dos Santos in the race for World Athlete of the Year
Brazilian hurdler Alison dos Santos, known as Piu, has been nominated for the 2026 Men's World Athlete of the Year award. World Athletics announced the ten nominees on October 6.
His season included a world record. On August 27, at the Diamond League meeting in Zurich, he completed the 400-meter hurdles in 45.80 seconds. He broke Karsten Warholm's record of 45.94, set at the Tokyo Olympics.
Piu also won the Ultimate Championship in Budapest in September, with a time of 45.98 seconds. He finished the season unbeaten in all 11 of his races in the event, including the Diamond League Final. This success adds to an impressive career. He won Olympic bronze in Tokyo and Paris, became world champion in 2022 and won world silver in 2025.
Four groups will vote: fans, athletes, the media and the World Athletics family, which includes officials and representatives from the sport. Each group accounts for 25% of the result. Voting closes on October 17. The winner will be announced in Monaco on November 29.

A world record attracts attention. An unbeaten season adds a different kind of weight to an athlete's achievements. Alison dos Santos has both as he enters the race for the 2026 Men's World Athlete of the Year award.
World Athletics announced the Brazilian, better known as Piu, among its ten male nominees on October 6. His case rests on a season that combined an exceptional peak with sustained success.
The defining performance came in Zurich on August 27. Piu clocked 45.80 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles, eclipsing the 45.94 world record Karsten Warholm had set at the Tokyo Olympics. In September, he followed that breakthrough with victory at the Ultimate Championship in Budapest, running 45.98. Across the season, he remained unbeaten in 11 races in the event, including the Diamond League Final.
Those results build on Olympic bronze medals in Tokyo and Paris, a world title in Eugene in 2022 and world silver in Tokyo in 2025. The record is a new milestone in a career that already included success at major international championships.
The award will be decided through votes from fans, athletes, the media and the World Athletics family, with each group carrying equal weight. Voting closes on October 17, and the winner will be announced in Monaco on November 29.
Together, the record and the unbeaten season give voters two distinct achievements to consider: the fastest performance ever in the event and a year without a defeat in it. Away from the track, the second may be the more useful lesson: world-class results rarely come from a single moment of brilliance, but from doing the basics well, again and again.
